I was born in France, raised in New York. My mother who at that time spoke only French made me her interpreter, making life between my American father and her interesting. At four I returned to France for a time and when I came back, English was totally gone from young memory. Not being able at that time to attend school until I was able to communicate again, at the counselor's reccommendation, I was to sit in front of the television until words would call back my forgotten tounge.
Early TV introduced a new show that made her a household name many years later...Julia Child..I loved her and I watched others like her as well in B&W. This was my first introduction that sparked my interest in FOOD. At that early age, I made instant mashed potatoes with canned mushroom gravy and canned onion sticks...mmmmmm...Chef Matt.
As years went on, my cooking skills and (thank God) tastes progressed and I entertained people, freinds, and family with many an oddball dish and food combinations. As I traveled, I would pick up various recipes, trying to add my flavors to them. I admired the way food looked on plates at restaurants, turning plate around and looking at them from different angles sometime embarrasing dates. I admired the wonderful way specialty houses presented foods in windows along with the exotic markets I loved strolling through.
As I became a photographer, I turned my attention to many subjects. Food was always the " difficult area" that most of my mentors warned to stay away from. What did they know? They mostly ate frozen foods and dialed out for diners.Eating was something that got in the way,had no time for...They played with their models and I began to play with mine ....FOOD.
Food is an art piece, properly treated. It is an expression of the culture it comes from. For some, it speaks for its people and the lifestyle they lead. Fast foods for Americans who lead a frenzied life with little time, 4 course meals for the Europeans who love to sit ,chat and interact. It is a universal language that every human on this planet understands. It is sensual, gratifying and beautiful from its origins to its presentation.
Some eat to live,(what a shame) others eat and live.
A food creator writes the symphony, a food photographer performs it for the audience.
